The Canadian Rockies are one of the most breathtaking mountain ranges in the world, and there’s no better way to experience them than a road trip from Calgary to Vancouver. Join me as I take you through some of the most stunning and adventure-packed destinations, highlighting all the must-see spots and activities along the way. If you're looking for a personal travel planner for your Canadian Rockies vacation, this guide will give you all the inspiration you need. One warning: nothing about this trip was cheap and you will be on the move....

Calgary: The Gateway to the Rockies

Our journey begins in Calgary, a vibrant city with a perfect mix of urban energy and outdoor adventure. Start your day with a visit to the Calgary Tower. The views from the observation deck are spectacular, offering a 360-degree panorama of the city and the Rockies in the distance. Trust me, it’s a great way to get a lay of the land before diving into your adventure.

For some adrenaline-pumping fun, head to WinSport Ski Resort and try downhill karting. It's like go-karting but on a ski hill! Racing down the hill with the wind in your hair is an absolute blast. Just remember to wear sturdy shoes and bring a jacket—it gets windy at the top!

Kananaskis County: Hiking Ha Ling Peak

Next, we drive to Kananaskis County, where the Ha Ling Peak hike awaits. This hike is challenging but rewarding, with breathtaking views from the summit. The trail is well-marked, and the sense of accomplishment you feel at the top is unbeatable. If you're not used to high altitudes, take it slow and bring plenty of water. The views from the top? Absolutely worth every step—you can see the whole valley spread out below you.

Banff: Canoeing and Fine Dining

Banff is a true gem in the Rockies. Spend your morning canoeing on the crystal-clear waters of Lake Louise. The serene environment, surrounded by towering peaks, makes for an unforgettable experience. I can honestly say, it's the most beautiful blue water I've ever seen—like something out of a dream.

Lake Louise - Yes, it's real!

After working up an appetite, head to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise for lunch. The food is exquisite, and the views of the lake and mountains are the perfect backdrop for a relaxing meal. Pro tip: Make a reservation in advance; the Fairmont is a popular spot, and you don’t want to miss out.

Yoho National Park: Waterfall Wonders

Yoho National Park is home to some of the most impressive waterfalls you'll ever see. Start with Takakkaw Falls, one of the highest in Canada. The sheer force and beauty of the falls are mesmerizing. You can hear the roar of the water long before you see it—it’s an awe-inspiring experience.

Next, visit Wapta Falls. The hike to the falls is relatively easy, and the sight of the massive, roaring waterfall is well worth the effort. It’s a bit off the beaten path, so it’s less crowded than some other spots, which makes it a peaceful retreat.

Golden: Thrills on the Water

Golden is a paradise for thrill-seekers. Go whitewater rafting on the Kicking Horse River for an adrenaline rush like no other. The rapids are intense, and the scenery is out of this world. If you’re new to rafting, don’t worry—the guides are fantastic and will make sure you have a safe and exciting ride.

If you prefer something a bit more laid-back, try fishing in one of the many pristine lakes and rivers. The tranquility and beauty of the surroundings make for a perfect fishing experience. Plus, there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of catching your own dinner!

Radium Hot Springs: Relax and Unwind

After all that adventure, it's time to relax at Lussier Springs and Fairmont Hot Springs. Soaking in the warm and freezing, mineral-rich waters is incredibly soothing, and the mountain views add to the serene atmosphere. Lussier springs are a hidden gem—less crowded than some other spots, and the perfect place to unwind. You have to drive up a long gravel road used by logging vehicles from time to time, but we found it pretty easy and completely worth the drive. Fairmont Hot Springs is in the Fairmont Resort and it's more like a hot public pool. Still very cool to do once in your life, but we vastly preferred the raw element of Lussier.

Johnston Canyon: Literally Chasing Waterfalls

Johnston Canyon is one of Banff's most popular hikes, and for good reason. The trail takes you through a stunning canyon with multiple waterfalls along the way. The hike is relatively easy and incredibly scenic, making it a must-do for any visitor. However, it can be incredibly crowded in the summer, so try to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the peak crowds. Highly recommend you beat the crowds here as the parking situation is crazy.

Kootenay National Park: Hidden Gems

Kootenay National Park is full of hidden gems. Stop by Olive Lake for a peaceful picnic, then head to Numa Falls and Marble Canyon for more breathtaking natural beauty. The park's diverse landscapes make it a unique and fascinating destination. It’s less visited than Banff or Jasper, so you’ll often have these spots almost to yourself.

Columbia Icefields Parkway: Glacier Adventures

The drive along the Columbia Icefields Parkway is one of the most scenic in the world. Stop at the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre and take a walk on the Crowfoot Glacier. The experience of walking on ancient ice is both humbling and awe-inspiring. Be sure to dress warmly, even in summer—the glacier is cold year-round! My one complaint about this experience is that they limit you to just 15 minutes on the glacier. I recommend a private hike if you want more time.

Jasper: Canyon Views and Sky High Adventures

Jasper is another highlight of the Rockies. Explore Maligne Canyon, with its deep, narrow gorge and stunning views. The hike is exhilarating, and the scenery is second to none. It’s a bit cooler and quieter than some of the other tourist spots, which makes for a more relaxed experience.

For a bird's-eye view of the park, take a ride on the Jasper SkyTram. The tram takes you to the top of Whistlers Mountain, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. It’s a great way to get a sense of the vastness of the Rockies.

Mount Robson Provincial Park: Majestic Views

No trip to the Rockies is complete without a visit to Mount Robson Provincial Park. Stop by the Visitor Centre for information on the best hikes and activities in the park. The views of Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, are truly magnificent. Standing at the base of this giant mountain is a humbling experience, and the photo opportunities are endless.

Wells Gray Provincial Park: Waterfall Wonderland

Wells Gray Provincial Park is known for its impressive waterfalls. Take a scenic drive through the park and stop to admire the many falls, including Helmcken Falls and Spahats Creek Falls. The park's rugged beauty and abundant wildlife make it a nature lover's paradise. Be sure to bring your camera—these waterfalls are some of the most photogenic you’ll ever see.

Kelowna: Wine and Wheels

Kelowna offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Spend a day touring the wineries and tasting some of the region's finest wines. The vineyards are beautiful, and the wine is top-notch. If you’re a wine enthusiast, this is a must-do.

For a bit of adventure, try mountain biking in Myra Canyon. The trails are exciting and offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The old railway trestles add a unique touch to the ride and make for some great photo ops.

Vancouver: City by the Sea

Our journey ends in the bustling city of Vancouver. Take a seaplane tour for a unique perspective of the city and its stunning surroundings. The views from above are simply spectacular—there’s nothing quite like seeing the city skyline against the backdrop of the mountains and ocean.

Back on the ground, rent a bike and explore the city, including Granville Island. The island's markets, shops, and eateries are a delight to explore, and the city's bike paths make it easy to get around. Vancouver is a cyclist’s dream, with so many paths and parks to discover.
